National Register of Historic Places for Wilmington, Delaware
The city of Delaware, on the Delaware River, was founded as Fort Christina by Swedish settlers in 1638. It was held by the Dutch from 1655 until 1664. E.I. Du Pont established a powder mill nearby in 1802 leading the area to grow. The city also became a port of entry and a manufacturing center with an extensive chemical industry.
The greatest growth in the city occurred during the Civil War as demands goods and materials grew tremendously. The city made products that included ships, railroad cars, gunpowder, shoes, tents, uniforms, blankets and other war-related goods. By 1868, Wilmington was producing more iron ships than the rest of the country combined. It was the first in the production of gunpowder and second in carriages and leather.
