Jan 31, 2010

Founded in 1809, Philadelphia's Walnut Street Theatre is the oldest theater in America. Live shows in this historical landmark are a real treat-- the restored theater is still reminiscent of its founding era, when lavish carpentry and intricately designed details were standard.

Stars of years past who appeared at the Walnut Street include Katharine and Audrey Hepburn, Jane Fonda, Robert Redford, Sidney Poitier, Ethel Walters and William Shatner, among many others.

The first production to take place at the Walnut Street Theatre was called The Rivals, which took place in 1812. President Thomas Jefferson and the Marquis de Lafayette, among many other notable figures were present. In 1923, performer Groucho Marx stopped his act in the middle to tell the audience that the president Warren G. Harding had passed away.

The theatre has a capacity of 1054, so it's perfect for live shows with an intimate, up-close feel. Recent shows include The Prince, Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, Fiddler on the Roof and Oliver!

Tickets can be purchased at the box office, which is open Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. (later on show dates). The box office is closed on Sundays, except for on show dates. Tickets can also be purchased online by visiting the Walnut Street Theatre's website (featured to the right).

Visitors can grab a bite to eat on-site at the Barrymore's Cafe, which is located in the theatre's lower lobby. A full bar, coffee house and cafe, Barrymore's offers a variety of tasty sandwiches, salads and desserts. Barrymore's Cafe is open one hour before showtime and during intermission, and is the perfect place to grab a specialty beverage in addition to delicious food.

A gift shop is also on site to commemorate your visit. Knick-knacks, postcards, mugs, pictures and figurines are available in the gift shop, which is open before and after all shows, as well as during intermission.
